Too Much Information? Warning girly topic

This post is regarding a girly topic, so you may not want to precede.

This post may classify as too much information, but right now I am having very intense menstrual cramps. About every 4th-6th period I get really bad cramps. I can barely sit here and type. I took two Motrin and have a cold/heat patch as well, but not much is helping.

I read online that exercise may help, but I can't fathom doing that right now, so I could use some other advice.

I also am on a low dose birth control because otherwise I have no regularity with my cycle (I have gone 90 plus days without a period.) Also without it my emotions are all over the place all month. I would love to go off the birth control and try something more natural, so any advice on that would also be appreciated.

Sorry for the so personal post, but I need some advice.

Thanks!

-Becky

update: today (Tues.) I feel much better. But still could use some tips.

I was also put on the pill because of very irregular cycles (I'd go like 6 months without). It took a few years, but now it's regulated and lightened up SO much that it's rarely anything above spotting, which is lovely. I used to have awful cramps too, which have significantly lessened… still a pain, but tylenol helps. Also, just putting pressure on my abdomen helps too.

I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (irregular cycle), so you might have your gyno do an investigation. My friend had extremely heavy periods and awful cramps, and she was diagnosed with endometriosis. Definitely discuss this with your doctor!

Becky,
I usually didn't have horrendous cramps but sometimes my flow was very heavy, and i had PMS that was very hard to deal with. This was before they acknowledged PMS, and everyone told me simply to snap out of it. (I got the snap part right at least ;-)

If you exercise consistently, that can help. Makes exercising while you have cramps easier to do. Not easy, but easier to do.

I also found changing my diet really helped. Less salt and sugar, less processed foods, and only healthy fats. I also smoked and drank coffee then; when i quit smoking, i noticed a difference, and when i switched from coffee to tea, i noticed a difference.

I said in an earlier response that i stopped drinking coffee after my first homeopathic remedy. This was in the early 1990's. My doc said that this one remedy would make many changes within me, and i think some of the extremes of my cycle were one of those things.

I'm at the age where i ought to be looking at menopause, but for now, menopause isn't in sight. I have found that over the years though, sometimes i go through seasons where i have worse cramps or heavier flow. Irregularity rarely happened with me--it did in seasons of extreme stress, but by and large, not a month goes by that i don't experience menses.

When i was in the season of worse than usual cramps, i found that taking meds as soon as my flow started helped alleviate the worst of it. But, it didn't make it go away altogether. But that and exercise really did help. Even if i didn't feel like it.

Thanks for the tips. I am currently working with my doctor. Fibroids, pain, and irregular periods caused them to put me on birth control. My cycle is now very regular, my fibroids are smaller as well. The cramps only once every 4-6 months (so basically only 2 or 3 times a year) is way better than it was. But I will add more exercise. And although I do not drink coffee, I still eat too much sugar, so I will try to cut that as well.

Thanks for reading my blog!
